Fair warning: Don’t watch these movies at night if you know you are easily scared and these are some of the best ones. Also, I don’t think you should watch these if you aren’t 16 years and above because I am not sure if you will be able to handle it or they are age appropriate for you.
I am the kind of person that cannot watch horror movies at night, who has been watching horror movies since childhood. Because of this I can watch horror movies, but I will be scared afterwards and it will take time for me to forget the feeling of horror I experienced. The vivid dreams I have had because of watching some of these have the capability to still scare me as I remember it all too well.
In fact, “Nightmare” is one of my blogs where I have mixed these dreams. You will probably not like it but it is my favorite because in my opinion it has a story that I have written and it is layered so reading it at least twice would give you a better idea. Also I tried to create imagery which really brought the contrast in the poem.
Writing this blog was not easy. I was genuinely spooked out. But I am proud of myself for creating a refreshing list and if you watch any of these you will surely love the story. A lot of these aren’t the most scary movies. However, they have a good story line and that is what makes them terrific. Here is the list of the absolute scariest movies ever in my opinion:
11. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Genre : Supernatural Horror/ Courtroom Drama
This horror movie blends classic horror with courtroom drama adding an extra layer of scare and entertainment for the viewers. The movie switches between past and present timelines also, unraveling many secrets. The courtroom drama is my favorite part as it brings both sides of the story to a very impartial extend. This is what sets it apart.

10. Kaun? (1999)
Genre : Psychological Suspense Thriller
This movie has Urmila Matodkar and Manoj Bajpayee in the leading roles. As good as both actors are. Urmila Matodkar leaves a lasting impression in the viewer’s mind. When the suspense of the movie is revealed you really are a little shocked and the ending just scared me. The expressions of Urmila Matodkar were something that can easily give you nightmares(killer expressions). Especially, the ending.

9. Conjuring (2013)
Genre : Supernatural Horror
This is a classic. Just watch it. It has all the elements. A couple moves into a new house with their children. Slowly haunting starts and does it scare is an understatement, it doesn’t let you play hide and clap. It makes you doubt every person who knocks on the door and you won’t look up your almirah or sleep on your back or ever wake up to go to the loo at 3 am. Also, you should watch other conjure-verse movies as in my opinion the stories in all the movies are great and keeps the viewer hooked.

8. Insidious (2010)
Genre : Supernatural Horror
Insidious gave me nightmares. The last scene specifically. Took me time to get over it and now I avoid watching it on TV as much as I can. They use dreams and while that is a unique way. This was used in A Nightmare on Elm Street which is totally worth watch and might put in my slasher movie list but this one has its own way on how dreams work. The theory and logic that they created around dreams is fictional but I was so young I fell for it. The only reason I survived watching countless horror movies is because of our Indian superhero Lord Hanuman and Hanuman Chalisa that instantly boosts me with positive energy.

7. Tumbadd (2018)
Genre : Period Horror Drama
“Tumbadd mai kya hai”, asks the naive and young son of the protagonist. You will know the answer to this question and also learn an important lesson via the story. This movie in my opinion is too underrated in India. The period shown, the cinematography to Tumbadd’s secret that I don’t want to spoil, everything screams the best movie. It is a gem and you need to watch it.

6. Paranormal Activity (2007)
Genre : Found Footage Style/ Supernatural Horror
I don’t know who thought of this style of movie in Horror genre but whoever did is surely clever and sadistic. This movie can scare me anytime. This is one of those horror movies that are actually scary. I did not have the courage to watch it more than once. Honestly, that was enough. The movie maybe a slow burner but the ending still sending chills in my spine while I write about it. And at the end, based on a real story was written on screen. Like don’t tell me and spoil my life by giving nightmares. That Indian found footage movie is also good. I think it was 6-5 =2. You can watch that too and other 5 movies of Paranormal Activity franchise that I watched too.

5. Veronica (2017)
Genre : Supernatural Horror
This movie was promoted the wrong way as the most scariest film. Veronica is one of the best horror movies of all time in terms of its story. It successfully creates the eerie atmosphere and you constantly are scared yet want to know what next. The story keeps you engrossed. They show a convent school and I was curious to see a different culture’s convent school as I have been in one. However, it was similar in the core values they impart in a convent. It is based on real story which is enough to scare me.

4. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Genre : Supernatural Horror
This is another movie in the list with a unique concept. It uses all the conventional horror elements yet up-scales them and presents it with an unconventional story line. As the title suggests that this is autopsy of Jane Doe, a young beautiful woman whose cause of death is unknown. She is brought for autopsy however the discoveries made during her autopsy will shock you. Getting goosebumps writing this as I can remember those terrifying scenes. So go now and watch it. People who like movies with mystery, supernatural, magic, witches, and a deeper meaning will like it.

3. Hereditary (2018)
Genre : Supernatural Horror
From the very first scene to the last scene this movie is way detailed so watch it twice or thrice. First for story, second for visuals and use of it and third for the hidden details in the story. Then you will appreciate it more. You can watch a few YouTube videos too to get a deeper insight into the film. The movie has many reasons why you should watch it so it won’t be possible to cover them all. The only way you can appreciate it is by watching it.

2. Midsommar (2019)
Genre : Folk Horror
The actress has done a commendable job. She is the star and the life of this horror movie. The movie looks like it has taken inspiration from many classics. The tone of the movie is eerie and mysterious. There are no ghosts involved but you don’t always need them to scare the life out of your system and develop trust issues or maybe not. Decide for yourself after watching it. The movie is cults-y and if you like such kind of movies this one you will like for sure. It is best horror movie of all time and in horror movie 2019.

1. Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Genre : Horror Thriller
Things Heard & Seen uses horror genre to depict the hardships on women. The gas lighting, constant nonsense from the world. The ending scene is visually the best. It also uses paintings of Hudson River School throughout the movie which is again commendable. The very first scene of the movie is a painting and the last too. The story is tightly woven with no loose ends. It has amazing cinematography and the lead Amanda Seyfried shines as the protagonist. All actors are amazing. In no way is this heavyweight movie after a deep message which is a great thing. You would expect that this would be the scariest out of all. However, no this isn’t the case. The movie is artistic and different than all the movies listed. The subtle horror in the movie that is relevant and unfortunately relatable is why it is first.

This was my list. Tell me in the comments what are your favourite horror movies that gave you nightmares.
