Financial Independence: A Freedom Struggle

When an individual is of the right age where she can earn and be financially free. She should be. Irrespective of her gender. As if that happens. The reality is far worse than this. Women are forced to be dependent on their father or husband for money. In the name of biased gender roles there will always be someone trying to repress a woman and become the ordeal of their lives.

Let us assume, if a man is financially dependent then he will be looked down upon. People will laugh at him, crack jokes, taunt him and insult him that he cannot provide for his family. People would not respect the man. This is however unusual.

If a woman on the other hand, is financially dependent which is more common. Her family and pretty much every single person in this society, would say that it is fine and her husband and father will look after her. However, she won’t be able to buy things or look after her expenses. She will have to ask someone for money. Even if she is buying groceries. She will probably be humiliated many times when she asks for money and will be told that she is not the one earning. She will be taunted and yes there will be sexist jokes around her and in the newspaper jokes column. Hence, she is definitely losing her respect just like when I reversed the gender roles. Ironically, there is equality in the treatment of a financially dependent person.

My point here is that irrespective of gender, every man and woman should be financially independent and free. It shouldn’t be a choice, just like doing house chores shouldn’t be a gender-specific job. Just like marriage is not treated as an individual’s choice. Of course, you may think otherwise, that what if a woman chooses to not work. Then that choice should be respected for a man too. As simple as writing this was, I am well aware that this isn’t how society works or thinks. Hopefully, we will see a change in the future. As financial independence is women’s ultimate empowerment which can lead to end of a freedom struggle.

P. S. I may have been aggressive in this blog but I hope my point came across . I hope every woman will dream of being independent financially and be free of any invisible shackles that we are surrounded by. I must have been really angry while writing this but I still think the message here is important. And I am not an expert in how to achieve financial freedom so I didn’t mention that but I would encourage to read books and articles on this topic.

Thanks for reading 🤗.
