11 Comedy/Lighthearted Series to Watch for All Age Groups

11. Gilmore Girls (2000 – 2007)
Genre : Comedy Drama

This show is a witty comedy drama, as it begins with the story of Lorelai (32 years) and her daughter Rory(16 years). When I started watching it, I couldn’t stop. The characters, the plot, everything keeps you hooked to the screen until season 6. The story wasn’t good anymore. It also got a reboot of 4 episodes which were not as good either, even though it had the characters and uses the same formula as the previous seasons, it falls apart. However, I would recommend to watch the first 5 seasons because they are amazing with all the pop culture references and the fun conversations and dialogue, you cannot help but crave to watch another episode. Also, the houses, the hotel and the town they are amazing visuals.

10. Suite Life of Karan and Kabir (2012 – 2013)
Genre : Comedy Drama

The Suite Life of Karan and Kabir is an Indian adaptation of Disney’s 2005 show,The Suite Life of Zack and Cody . A lot of people think that Zack and Cody was a better show. However, I liked this remake too. It was overall fun and interesting and even I when knew what was going to happen, I enjoyed watching it anyway. In fact, I used to eagerly wait for it every Sunday to watch this show. You can easily find the episodes on YouTube. I would recommend to give it a try, you wouldn’t be disappointed. Of course, keep in mind that it is for tween and teens. I still enjoy it. Probably, reminiscing the good old Disney days when Disney was Disney.

9. Never Have I Ever (2020 – )
Genre : Comedy Drama

It is a coming of age comedy drama about a socially awkward teen and how she lands into equally awkward situations while understanding her relationships with her mother and understanding/discovering herself. Mindy Kaling ,who was a famous show The Office and The Mindy Project, is the writer of the show and needless to say she makes the show awesome to watch with her sense of humor in dialogues. The second season’s trailer is also about to drop this week and it will release on 15 July 2021 so this is the perfect time to watch this series.

8. Sumit Sambhal Lega (2015 – 2016)
Genre : Comedy Drama

The series is the Hindi adaptation of Warner Bros sitcom series Everybody Loves Raymond. The show used to air at 10 pm on Star Plus and was highly recommended by everyone to me and so I had to watch it. Although, it is an adaptation I still liked it more than the original. Making it Indian really works. I am sure people will disagree with me and I have seen a few seasons of the original but I liked the Indian version. Tragically, the show was not picked up for another season due to low TRPs (time slot could be the reason ) but it has a good rating and is still available on Hotstar. My favorite character was that of Satish Kaushik, he outshines all the other characters.

7. Best of Luck Nikki (2011 -2016)
Genre : Comedy Drama

Another Disney show, there are few more left that you will read in a while and then probably watch at least one of these. I really love the comedy and everything in the show. After seeing the list you will clearly see I like these kind of comedy shows a lot. They are of short duration, entertaining, have amazing story line, all the characters are hilarious and this is no exception. The series is an adaptation of the American series Good Luck Charlie, with a plot that is similar to the American version. I haven’t watched the American version but this adaptation is definitely worth the watch. You can easily find it on YouTube.

6. Sonny with a Chance (2009 – 2011)
Genre : Comedy Drama

I used to watch a lot of Disney shows when Disney was Disney and not trying to be Hungama. I don’t know why Disney India decided that these shows were not for Indian audience. Sonny with a chance is so funny. Demi Lovato is fantastic and she brings the whole show to life, she is the star of the show. A spin off was also made but with no Demi Lovato, but it just falls flat, even though the actors do their best. There is a comedy show within the comedy show and that is also funny. Like Shinchan has Action Kamen and Quantum Robot episodes in it and they work well as well. I have lost the number of times I have watched both the seasons and I can safely say that there is no reason that a person wouldn’t enjoy it. It was sad that the show wasn’t picked up for more reasons due to some controversies that I can’t get into as this blog isn’t about that. Long story short, this will leave you wanting for more seasons.

5. Atypical (2017 – 2021)
Genre : Comedy Drama

I had no hopes when I started watching this show. It just had a good rating and so I thought why not watch it. But this show kept me hooked to it. It also deals with the central theme very effectively and effortlessly. Overall, it is definitely a good watch. The way it deals with all the issues using comedy, I mean how can you not like it.

4. Modern Family (2009 -2020)
Genre : Comedy Drama

This show is entertaining, funny and if you are an Indian like me, some jokes might be a bouncer as well but those aren’t much. The best part of the show is that among all the funny and entertaining mess that is going on in the show, at the end there is always a message which is effortlessly put across which solves and summarizes the little problems of our life {see what I did there: mess and message}. All the cast members put together really work well. And you can actually get some amazing advice for your own life while watching the show. For example, I was second guessing myself but because of an amazing advice given in the show to Alex by Jay I was able to reduce my conflict on it and honestly I felt unburdened, it was the kind of advice I needed. It was Season 10 Episode 3. I think this is the show I will be watching years from now because it covers people of all ages so you really get good advice and watch a show that makes you laugh. Currently, I am watching this show again.

3. How I Met Your Mother (2005 – 2014)
Genre : Comedy Drama

This could’ve been on top of the list. The ending however is something I haven’t been able to make my peace with. It is an amazing show that cannot be missed. Lighthearted, entertaining with the misadventures of a legen… wait for it… dary group of friends.

2. Wizards of Waverly Place (2007 – 2012)
Genre : Teen sitcom

This show is wonderful. I love it. I have lost the count on how many times I have watched all the seasons and the movies. Alex Russo is the best character and Selena Gomez is the best in this show. It has wizards, comedy, monsters, angels, vampires, werewolves, mummies, Wizarding school, wizarding world, time travel. Basically, the perfect recipe for the perfect show.

1. Selena + Chef (2020 – )
Genre : Cooking Show

Currently, the show has 2 seasons. In my opinion, it is a simple yet amazing and entertaining show. I don’t watch cooking shows but I watched it because of Selena Gomez. I wasn’t sure if I would like it or not. Honesty, I couldn’t get enough of it. It is also surprising and interesting that they were able to pull this off during quarantine. I know it may seem like who watches cooking shows but I think that it is definitely very entertaining. You could see glimpses of Alex Russo in Selena as well. I enjoyed it a lot. It is still surprising to me that how were they able to make this show work. In fact, it has a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So definitely check it out.

Had to mention: Jane the Virgin: I liked it a lot but the last season was just not good and I was team Jane and Michael so Jane and Rafael weren’t my favorite couple either. However, the other seasons are definitely worth watching and you will like it. It is like an Indian TV serial but wayyy better because they don’t drag the story for 20 years but every season has a few episodes that keeps the story intact. If you like any of the above shows, I definitely think you will like this too.
